Finding authenticity as leaders is key to fostering a culture that celebrates all perspectives and the strengths of every individual. When women can lead authentically at work, they shape new norms and pave the way for innovative thinking and inclusive decision-making to drive success.

At McKesson, our Women Empowered (WE) employee resource group (ERG) is dedicated to building robust support systems that address the challenges women face as they navigate – and advance in – their careers. By focusing on accelerating action, WE creates opportunities for women to connect, learn and grow, ensuring they have the tools and support necessary to overcome obstacles and achieve their professional aspirations. Through mentorship, sponsorship, and a strong network of allies, WE empowers women to lead with confidence and authenticity.

Kasey ChaseKacey Chase has worked in various roles throughout her 10 years at McKesson and currently serves as vice president of RXOwnership for the northeast region. As a WE U.S. North, East and International board member, she facilitates meaningful mentor-mentee connections through the WE Choose Your Own Adventure Mentoring Program, and she empowers women to thrive at work and in life.

Veronica GermanVeronica German joined McKesson 30 years ago and currently serves as a pharmacy sales consultant supporting customers across her region while balancing ERG leadership responsibilities. As a member of the WE national board, Veronica has brought forward some of WE’s most popular events and championed impactful mentorship and sponsorship programs.

Kristin ChambersKristin Chambers joined McKesson in the fall of 2020 and serves as vice president of provider transformation, working with community providers to create and enhance our offerings to provide best-in-class care across the country. Her leadership as WE West chair has strengthened WE’s professional development opportunities, and she inspires members to own their career paths.

How do mentorship and sponsorship shape success at McKesson?

Kacey: I lead the mentor program for women in pharmacy at McKesson as well as the WE mentor program, and it’s amazing to see the relationships that develop. The programs are open to anyone, including male allies who often serve as mentors. Reflecting on my own journey, my first manager at McKesson has served as my mentor for a decade. Committing to monthly catch-ups for 10 years speaks volumes about her investment in my growth, and I aim to foster similar, impactful connections for others.

Veronica: Mentorship and sponsorship programs are fantastic resources, but these relationships also can happen organically. If you have someone who guides, supports, and empowers you to achieve personal and professional growth, that’s mentorship. If leadership recommends you for involvement with a project, that’s sponsorship. Look around and see who currently serves as an unofficial mentor or sponsor, because you likely already have them. Foster those relationships because they can make a big difference to your success.

Kristin: Networking is everything. For WE West, our board is passionate about creating opportunities for our members to grow, connect and learn together. Personally, I informally mentor 10 individuals, and I aim to provide honest answers and help direct them toward the right path. Mentorship and sponsorship serve different purposes, and it’s important to know that both sides need to contribute. I’ve had a mentee who I’ve become a sponsor for because we’ve developed a strong relationship, and they’ve put in the work.

How has your involvement with WE impacted you?

Kacey: I didn’t know what I was signing up for when I joined WE, and I mean that in the best way possible. Working with this group gives me confidence because I have access to resources that support the progression of my career at McKesson, and I feel supported by everyone in the ERG. My involvement has taught me to never be complacent because I can always do more to advance my personal and professional development.

Veronica: When I joined WE seven years ago, it felt like a company within a company. We maintain a budget, work toward goals, and collaborate across business units – skills that I can apply in my daily work. I love being on the national board and learning from senior leaders because they inspire me to strive for greatness. I’ve stayed at McKesson for 30 years because the people and culture make me feel like I belong, and WE is a big part of that.

Kristin: I initially joined WE because I wanted to get to know new people, but I quickly learned that there are so many benefits to being a member. Everyone genuinely cares about each other, and during chapter calls, we take time to ask how everyone is doing to foster genuine connections before we get into the agenda. As a WE leader, I’ve brought in professionals to speak on important topics focused on women's health which affect many in the workplace. These events have been impactful not only for me, but for our membership as well.

What advice do you have for women in the workplace?

Kacey: Be bold in your career choices. Don't let fear or self-doubt hold you back. Pursue your aspirations with courage and determination. Trust in your abilities and seek out mentors who can guide you along the way. Your career is your journey, and it's important to proactively shape it. Don’t be afraid to be courageous and take the leap because it’s the only way you’re going to get where you want to go.

Veronica: Don't wait to take control of your career. Ask questions and reach out to those whose career journeys have inspired you. And take advantage of your benefits. I earned my undergraduate and graduate degree with tuition reimbursement which helped me accelerate my career.

Kristin: Find your tribe, build genuine relationships, and advocate for yourself by making your achievements known. Women often excel but don't always showcase their successes, and unseen accomplishments don't drive recognition. Toot your own horn. Always pay it forward by lifting others as you climb, fostering a supportive and empowering environment for all.

Through their experiences and insights, Kacey, Veronica and Kristin illuminate the power of mentorship and sponsorship in fostering growth and success at McKesson. They remind us that with support and determination, women can thrive as their authentic selves.
